The annual international ELEMENTI – Acqua Aria Terra Fuoco (Water Air Earth Fire) event is a workshop, a stage and a hothouse for figures and forms of an environmental nature. Its home is Parma, a place steeped in environmental tradition and innovation along with sustainable development and safeguarding the territory; not to mention a history steeped in art and culture. The first edition of the event will be held from Wednesday 17 to Sunday 221 May 2006, and is sponsored by Parma Municipality’s Mobility and Environment Department and the Ministry for the Environment and Territorial Conservation. Its aim is to promote new tools for providing a transversal take on the Environment which unite science and imagination, technology and art. The event is not a festival but a “celebration” of the natural elements – water, air, earth and fire - to acquaint ourselves with them, imagine them and protect them. Each edition will feature a detailed examination of one of the four elements, including its cultural, environmental and scientific implications; it will do so through round table discussions, lessons, dialogues, workshops, projections and performances along with many other initiatives. The theme for ELEMENTI 2006 is fire.

Alongside scientific and cultural personages and entities of international stature, the event avails of considerable support from the city of Parma, with its close-knit network of institutions, associations, scientific and cultural bodies. Parma’s environmental vocation is recognised on an international level: indeed the city occupies eleventh place in the report drafted by Legambiente on the 2006 URBAN ECOSYSTEM. From public transport to refuse collection and energy issues, the Mobility and Environment Department has always analysed environmental problems from a global, systematic standpoint.

The birth of ELEMENTI sees the promotion of Parma as an international reference point for debate on environmental issues.
